It's Time to Increase the Cigarette Tax in Iowa

Among the many healthcare challenges facing our state, our public health policy efforts to curb smoking have fallen behind where we were a decade ago, and according to a recent American Cancer Society (ACS) report, we've also fallen behind other states.

Today, I am calling for a rate increase on cigarette taxes in Iowa. While the ACS is calling for an increase of $1.50 per pack, I want to sit down with advocates and members from both parties to find a rate that makes sense to meet the goals we have for treatment and prevention in the state of Iowa.

When we increase the cigarette tax, not only does that serve as a deterrent, but it also provides funding for prevention programs, healthcare programs, and treatment.
