The minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 since it was set at that level back in 2008 but the Consumer Price Index has increased nearly 15% in that time. It is time to do something smart for workers, businesses, and our communities, and provide long-term guidance on the minimum wage in Iowa.
Last week, Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett announced his campaign for the Republican nomination for Governor of Iowa and called for an increase in the minimum wage.
One of his potential opponents on the Democratic ticket, State Senator Nate Boulton agreed.
On this issue, I'm on the side of supporting our communities and making them stronger and that requires an increase in the minimum wage. We must put politics aside and make the minimum wage a livable wage once again.
