Last year I saw a piece on CBS News about special veterans courts. The concept stuck with me which is why I was so pleased to see the Iowa Senate take up the idea in the 86th General Assembly. Senate File 2168 establishes a “veterans treatment court in each judicial district.”
Some of the key bill details:
- This treatment court will provide court services to veterans and to integrate court sanctions and incentives with substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, and transitional services for veterans, in a judicially supervised court setting.
- It will work for early and prompt identification and foster a coordinated placement of eligible participants into treatment programs.
I strongly support this legislation which not only helps and supports our Iowa veterans but focuses on treatment of non-domestic violence crimes instead of long-term punishment.
