A Better Iowa: It’s time to erase stigma of Alzheimer’s, dementia

When I began volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association two years ago, something stuck out to me: Alzheimer’s is the only disease among the top 10 causes of death in America that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.

An episode of “The West Wing” did an entire episode showing the impacts of Alzheimer’s where they called the disease, “the long goodbye.” The great Glen Campbell wrote a song about his battle with Alzheimer’s called, “I’m not going to miss you.” And last year, Julianne Moore won an Oscar for her role in “Still Alice.”

In his farewell letter to the American people, former president Ronald Reagan brought Alzheimer’s disease into the public spotlight but to this day it remains a disease that is rarely talked about despite its increasing burden on families and our health care system.
