This column tri-weekly column, “From Richard’s Oft Cluttered Desk” appears every third Wednesday.
By the time this column is published I will have lived in New York City for over a month. I will have missed my stop on the Subway. I have attended a BAM performance. I will have had an interview. I will have attended a networking event. I will have made a few new friends. And I will have gotten used to the Eastern Time Zone (against my personal preference of the wonderfulness that is the Central Time Zone).
I must say I am enjoying the city thus far. I’m sure once I get a new job and make even more friends it will begin to feel like home. That said, I miss a few things from my old life.
I miss my car. Having that freedom, while it would occasionally cause headaches and cost a bit of money, was nice. I miss jamming on the radio and the radio programs I had in Kansas City. Shoot, I don’t even have a radio here at all!
I miss Hy-Vee. For my fellow Mid-westerners, Hy-Vee is the grocery store in nearly every major (and some minor) cities. I grew up with them. Now I have tiny isles, a tiny selection. And get this: the cashiers will not, I repeat, will not take items out of the basket. You have to do it for them.
I miss my quiet neighborhood. Don’t get me wrong, I love where I live. It is safe and modestly clean. It’s just we live on a busier street than either of us would like and trucks are going by nearly every hour of the day. And while I am glad we’re not right next to the subway, the 15 minute walk is a bit time-consuming.
I miss Target. Who knew there was only like one in the entire city?! It is those stores that I miss. The quick, ‘Oh I need one item’ moments that can tear apart whole days.
But I like it here. The energy in Manhattan is energizing. Some people are nice. The weather is changing and I’m excited to bust out my camera and share this journey with you. They say New York is one of the cities that never sleeps. that’s not quite true. But it is a city with untold energy and history. And I can’t wait for the next month. Watch out New York!
